Dog Saves Missing Toddler After 7-Mile Journey Through Arizona Wilderness
A two-year-old boy in Arizona walked 7 miles alone through rugged wilderness before being found by a rancher's dog. Read how this rescue unfolded and saved his life.
The Arizona high desert stretches out for miles in every direction. It is a place of quiet, where the sky seems endless and the land is as raw as it is beautiful. It is also a place where nature rules. The nights are cold. The ground is rough. And when a child disappears into it, time becomes everything.
On the morning of April 14, 2025, in Seligman, Arizona, two-year-old Boden Allen slipped away from his family’s home. His parents, Sarah and Nathan, were nearby. But in just a few moments, Boden was gone. They searched frantically and then called for help. The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office responded immediately, and soon more than forty people joined the search. Helicopters flew overhead, and search teams combed the area. But there was no sign of the missing boy.
The land surrounding their home is remote and wild. Thick brush, uneven terrain, and wildlife, including mountain lions, made the search urgent with every passing hour. As night fell, temperatures dropped into the thirties. Boden was out there somewhere, barefoot and only two years old.
The next morning, on April 15, rancher Scotty Dunton was going about his daily routine when something unusual caught his eye. His dog Buford, a large white Anatolian Pyrenees livestock guardian, was walking toward the ranch house. Buford had wandered off earlier, but now he was back. Behind him walked a toddler.
“I saw Buford coming up, just as usual,” Dunton told People magazine. “But then I saw the little guy behind him. Dirty, barefoot. Just walking like it was nothing.”
It was Boden.
He had walked almost seven miles through rugged country, alone. He had curled up under a tree for the night and somehow made it until morning. Then Buford found him.
Dunton was stunned and immediately called the sheriff’s office. When search crews arrived, they were amazed too. Boden had some scratches and was dehydrated but was otherwise healthy. The place where Buford found him was deep in the woods and not even accessible by vehicle.
“He was in really good shape considering the situation,” said one official with the sheriff’s office, according to ABC News.
Buford had simply done what no one else could. He found the child and brought him to safety, walking quietly and patiently ahead of him, as if he knew exactly what was needed.

Scotty Dunton says Buford has always been a good dog, but this was different. This was instinct, loyalty, and something more. Something almost impossible to explain.
Buford did not bark. He did not lead a search team. He just went into the wilderness, found a child, and walked him home.
Boden is now safe, home with his family. His parents have not spoken much to the press, but their relief is clear. This story could have ended in heartbreak. Instead, it ended with a child walking behind a dog in the morning light.
Buford is back on the ranch now, watching over animals and resting in the dust. He does not seem to know he is a hero. But to everyone who followed this story, that is exactly what he is.
